Dartmouth's student-led newspaper, The Dartmouth, covered an event of The Middle East Dialogues that are a special topic series as part of The Dialogue Project that encompass courses and events related to timely, challenging topics. The lecture titled "The Arab world and the Demise of the Caliphate" featured professor Yoav Di-Capua of the University of Texas, Austin and Jonathan Laurence, a political science professor at Boston College.

"In his lecture, Laurence explained that the disappearance of a consensual, Islamic sovereign left a power vacuum and made it unclear who would protect Muslims worldwide. Laurence said this event has led to the emergence of various non-state actors, including extremist Abu Bakr al Baghdadi," writes student reporter, Alex Rockmore.
